GENEALOGY WORKSHOP 2021

The North Lanark Historical Society will host its eighth genealogy workshop on the following dates:

Monday, April 19th
Tuesday, April 20th
Thursday, April 22nd

Presentations and group Q & A sessions will be given using Zoom

One-on-one support will be offered to help attendees build and research their famiy trees using Zoom screen-sharing capabilities, email, or telephone. Participants will be provided up to 30 minutes of individual support included in their registration.

Participants will be provided with free access to Ancestry.ca for the duration of the workshop, and up to April 30th.

The cost to participate in all sessions is $50

Who Should Attend?

The workshop is intended for people who wish to begin building a family tree, or who wish to take advantage of the sources and services available online.

For those who have considerable experience already, the workshop will provide a refresher, showing comparisons of online resources and programs, and will provide some research assistance.

  • Different reasons to work on your family tree, and how that effects your approach
  • The pros and cons of building your family tree on the internet
  • Alternate internet genealogy services; for research and to build trees
  • Alternate PC genealogy programs; to build or backup family trees
  • Demonstration of starting a new tree on Ancestry.ca
  • Citing your sources; the importance of documenting your tree
  • Samples of sources from loyalist, civilian, and military records
  • Helpful free online genealogy-related research sites and published materials
  • Program and research assistance from workshop staff
  • DNA basics including inheritance, and amount of common DNA between relatives
  • Autosomal testing, including raw data reporting, ethnicity estimates, DNA matches and kinship, and health interpretation (optional)
  • Y chromosome testing to determine historical male groups
  • Mitochondrial DNA testing to determine historical female groups
  • DNA segment analysis
  • Alternative testing companies

Instructor's Qualifications

Presentations and support will be made by Bob Butler and Brian Tackaberry. Borth Have been working steadily on genealogy for many years, starting during the 'bad old days' when microfilms were a primary source of information.

Brian is a long-time genealogy researcher, member of the Ontario Genealogical Society(OGS), a past president of the Bay of Quinte Branch of the United Empire Loyalists, and a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and New England Historical and Genealogical Society.Brian is the co-author of The Lost Generation of Mississippi Mills: WWI Casualties and author of Forgotten Heroes: Mississippi Mills Valour Award Receipients of the Great War.

Bob is a member of the Ontario Genealogical Society and participated in their Computer Special Interest Group for several years. He is also a member of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO). He has provided research room support at Ottawa OGS and BIFHSGO conferences.
